Mar 03 2009: New Release

Mar 3, 2009 by

I used to stand outside of “Albums On The Hill” for the midnight release of U2 albums, and other albums by my favorite artists. I couldn’t get the plastic packaging off the CD fast enough once I got back in my car. Now albums are leaked weeks before they are released. There’s no anticipation. But I held out and waited for the release day for U2′s new album No Line On the Horizon before I listened to it. These days it’s not about getting the plastic off fast, it’s about waiting patiently for the download.

I dont miss the tangible CD.

I don't miss the tangible CD.

Just because…

I still think this video is awesome and Bono looks hot and it’s Friday:

People hated “Pop”, but I loved it! A dozen years later and I still get giddy over it.

Oh Blog!

Yesterday appeared to be a slow blog day. I kept checking my Bloglines but wasn’t getting much, which was especially painful because I was in a lot of boring meetings with my laptop just waiting to read something knitty or scrapbooky or foody or funny or Baracky. Sadly though, there just wasn’t much. By last night I was fed up with Bloglines after I kept getting a couple of errors on blogs that it wasn’t getting the feed for. So I kept trying to repair it but it wasn’t getting repaired. I then decided that I was sick of Bloglines. I’ve been using it for a long time and there are a lot of features that I like, but I felt like maybe I wasn’t getting all the feeds that I had subscribed to.

So I went through the tedious process of switching to Google Reader. Perhaps there was an easier way to do this, but I didn’t try hard to figure that out. Instead I just went through my Bloglines and clicked on each Blog’s website to grab the URL, then subscribed to it through Google Reader. I can’t tell you how much I was missing by using Bloglines. It wasn’t pulling at least 10% of my feeds. So that’s like 15 blogs I haven’t been reading for a long time.

Anyway, I’m now all set up with Google Reader and pretty happy. I like supporting the little guy (Bloglines), but the technology company that is slowly taking over my day-to-day Internettin’ (Google) just does it right.

Poppy Seed Massacre

So I am a sucker for poppy seed bagels, even though they make a huge mess and poppy seeds get stuck in my teeth. I just find them so tasty and therefore put up with it. Today though there was a complete poppy seed disaster at my desk. I picked one up this morning at the student center’s cafeteria and much to my dismay the bagel slicer was MIA. Needless to say, slicing a poppy seed bagel with a knife at my desk made for quite a mess…

Pineapple Boat

Last night after work I went with Mike to Asian Fusion, my new favorite place for Chinese. Once again it was completely awesome and delicious. I told him I would buy him dinner and it turned out to be like $50. Well worth it though! We’ll be able to eat leftovers for lunch today too, so at least we’re getting a couple meals out of it.

Oscars-Shmoscars

I am thoroughly disappointed that Revolutionary Road didn’t get the nominations I thought it deserved. I realize that the movie isn’t for everybody and most people who see it either love it or hate it, but at the very least the actors definitely deserved nominations. I’ve seen all the nominated Best Picture movies and I’m just feeling kind of blah about it. I thought

Frost/Nixon was completely lame and had nothing special about it. I liked the movie, but it didn’t scream Oscar. I would have been just as well off watching a documentary on the History channel about it and then the actual interview. I really believe that when Ron Howard makes a movie it automatically gets nominated and that just pisses me off. Frost/Nixon made me want to do two things…

1. Watch The Queen, since the guy who played David Frost is the same guy who played Tony Blair. What a good movie that was.

Frost/Nixon vs. The Queen

2. Watch Pride & Prejudice for the millionth time because the guy who played John Birt played the scrumptious and adorable Mr. Darcy. And we all know how I can’t resist Mr. Darcy.

Frost/Nixon vs. Pride & Prejudice

I have mixed feelings on Slumdog Millionaire. Someone I really respect, Jim Emerson, ripped Slumdog apart and I sort of agree with him. Jim is a great critic and works with Roger Ebert. Since Roger has been ill the past couple of years Jim has taken over at the Conference on World Affairs here on campus. I can’t wait until April when he comes to campus and does his Interruptus. I have a feeling that we might be watching Dark Knight, which is a movie he doesn’t altogether love. Last year we did No Country for Old Men and he made me learn to appreciate that movie so much. He’s great.

The Weekend Ahead

I’m going to do lots and lots of laundry. I’m going to hopefully get back into writing my story, which I’ve had to put on the backburner this week. I also want to try a little scrapbooking and knitting. Sunday night I have another birthday dinner to attend with the birthday crew, so that should be fun. And of course, I’ll blog!

Bruce, Barack, and Bono…oh my!

Jan 19, 2009 by

So far this four-day weekend has been a fantastic success at relaxation. There have been lots of movies, reading, and even some knitting, believe it or not. Obviously it will all come to a splendid conclusion tomorrow when I get to watch the inauguration.

Brian came over yesterday and we had a pleasant morning and afternoon. It’s the first time I had seen him this year. He mostly played with the cats while he was here and brushed Penny for at least half an hour. The girls were in heaven.

Yesterday I got the chance to watch the We Are One celebration to kick off the Inauguration events. How could I not? It only had three of my favorite men ever in it:

Best. HBO. Special. EVER.

Best. HBO. Special. EVER.

Bruce was just okay. Barack was brilliant as always. And my one true love Bono was of course my favorite part. I completely called it and told Mike that U2 would sing “City of Blinding Lights” and then Barack would speak. Sure enough, after singing “In the Name of Love” that’s exactly what happened. Bono looked hot too. I love the haircut so much and I loved his scarf. Yum yum. He’s going to be 49 this year. Where is time escaping too so quickly?

A Chunky Challenge

Jan 12, 2009 by

I’ve decided to participate in the Chunkster Challenge 2009. It’s a challenge to read chunky books, over 450 pages of Adult fiction, to be completed by November 15. There’s different levels to participate at and I’ve opted for the “Do These Books Make my Butt Look Big?” category, which is 3-5 chunksters.

Read more about the challenge here.

Thus far I’ve decided on:

Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon
The Alienist by Caleb Carr
Blood Memory by Greg Iles
