Perfection and Imperfection

Nov 16, 2008 by

Well I know the weekend isn’t quite over, but I think it’s been a great one thus far. And when it’s good like this it goes by way too fast. It’s been a weekend filled with perfection and imperfection, achievement and slacking, flaws and some flawless moments.

Perfection…

First and foremost, my co-worker Jody’s birthday party last night. It was a fine time. We all met up for drinks, appetizers, and then dinner at Bloom. Jody’s wife Michelle bought the first round and the appetizers, which was lovely of her to do for about fourteen people. Dinner was divine and the company made the evening. After Bloom, a small group of us went out after to CB & Potts for beers. We laughed our asses off until after midnight. It was great to get out like that. One very positive outcome of the night is that I’m now going out next Friday night with Michelle and some of her friends to see a late night showing of “Twilight” after having dinner and drinks at Gordon Biersch.

Imperfection…

Forgetting to call my friend Marci on her 30th birthday, which was also yesterday. I left her a comment on Facebook, but forgot to follow up with a call. I called today to try and make up for it, but it just wasn’t the same.

Perfection…

My “desk downstairs” plan. So far it is working out wonderfully. It was hard at first to get used to it. After playing on my computer, I would go sit down on the couch and I felt like I was missing something….my laptop. After getting over that notion, I have enjoyed this new wired way where I have to sit down and focus. Versus slouching on the couch and mindlessly browsing. I have made more out of my computer time.

Imperfection…

The scarf I’m knitting. I ended up with a big knot in my yarn that took me an hour to untangle. Also, I stupidly decided last week to to switch needles mid-knit. Same size, just different needles. How silly of me. Even if needs are the same size they can create different outcomes. So after a few rows, I realized this and switched back. I just expected this scarf to be flawless and as time goes on it has more and more flaws.

Perfection…

Planning my menu and shopping. For the third of fourth week in a row I have planned out a week’s worth of meals and shopped accordingly. This really helped out at the grocery store yesterday when I only spent $22 on the food that would compliment the food I already have for a week’s worth of meals. Very well done! And I’m not just feeding myself here. All the lunches are shared with Mike, as shown below.

Imperfection…

Being a sloppy cooker and succumbing to the candy bowl. I’ve been making paninis recently, which I love, but today’s fancy grilled cheese got a little bit crazy and I got a little too greedy. When I found the cheese wasn’t melted to the desire I wanted it, I put it back on the grill and walked away for a bit. Needless to say the cheese made a run for it. Then the candy bowl. It calls to me every now and again. I usually only have a piece a day, but today I’ve had three. I need to take this into work and give it away.

Perfection…

My digital scrapbooking is coming along so well. I am so happy to have all the tools I need to make some great pages. And I’m doing a little more with my photos then I usually do, like this one below:

Imperfection…

I took a photo from last night’s dinner with my iPhone. It came out so incredibly dark. I tried to improve it with every trick I know, but basically there was just no good way of bringing it back to life in a real way.

poor

So that pretty much wraps up what I’ve been up to. The rest of my day will consist of what it usually does on a Sunday afternoon…laundry and cleaning.

She leaves the house.

Nov 9, 2008 by

I decided I had to get out of the house today. Sometimes on the weekend, I go into my home and I don’t go out until Mike picks me up for work on Monday. It’s quite lazy and not overly productive. I wish I had more energy sometimes, but I have to admit, it’s great to just relax and do my thing. Sometimes I think I’m still reacting to being with Brian. When he was around there was no time to just lay around in my pajamas and watch tv or knit or be on my computer. So even a year later I feel like I’m getting away with something when I do nothing but that. It feels rebellious, when really it is just sort of lazy and unproductive.

Mostly, I just had to get out of my apartment today because the cats are driving me crazy. They are just a mess sometimes and they wont’ leave me alone. I needed a break! Yep, it’s official. I’ve become the weird cat lady who needs a break from her beloved pets. Gah.

I just called Brian to tell him all about the cats. If anyone gets it, he does! We love our little ones.

Anyway, so I came to Panera today to just relax with a big glass of ice tea and play around on my computer. I’ve been doing some digital srapbooking, which was has been fun. The only problem is that I sort of feel like I’m doing work when I work on it. I guess I should feel so lucky that I get to do layout at my job and get paid for it. Just this week I got to layout a newsletter my organization publishes twice a year. I kept putting it off until I realized….what am I doing? This is what I love to do even if the content is boring.

I’m making a Barack Obama album on 12×12 prints to slide into the Picfolio Max. Fortunately for me they had great press kits with all of their logos in vector format. Perfect! I’m able to manipulate and use them to my delight! Here’s a peek at what I’ve made so far:

I also began working on Mike’s scarf that he requested. The red is bit bright, but I think it’s going to turn out nicely. It will be striped on the ends and just red in the middle. It reminds me of the Chicago Blackhawks, so I’m sure he’ll enjoy it.

When I do go home I’ve really got a lot things I need to do around the house. I have been seriously slacking during this crazy good week.

Eek! A post, a post!

So yeah….a few things have happened since I last posted.

I got in a huge fight with my mom. I finished my pumpkin hat and went to a fun halloween party. I got a little drunk. I took a little time off. I did a lot of work things and let’s see…there’s something else…

OH YEAH! There’s a new leader of the free world.

President-Elect Obama

President-Elect Obama

So let’s back up to Halloween.

For Halloween, I decided to knit Crazy Aunt Purl’s “Halloweenie Beanie”, which is essentially just a pumpkin hat. I think it turned out really cute!

A pumpkin girl.

A pumpkin girl.

So I was a pumpkin for Halloween. On the day itself there wasn’t too much to report. My sister’s job hosted a costume contest again in the UMC. We went over there and it was pretty funny what people come up with.

That night, I just hung out at home, hoping for a Trick-Or-Treat -er, but I didn’t get one. Sad. I of course bought a big bag of candy. Now it takes up space in my house. I should probably bring it in to work. I ended up watching “Shaun of the Dead” which was really awesome. One of my co-workers came as Shaun and he did a great job as it. I had never seen it, so he burned it for me. It was a great thing to watch on Halloween.

I went to sleep peacefully that night, only to wake up at like 7:45 to a phone call from my dad. Well apparently my mom went all crazy again about McCain, or should I say about Obama. You see, Obama decided to make his last trip to Colorado before the election to my hometown, Pueblo. Well it wasn’t just in Pueblo, it was directly in front of my mother’s antique shop. Well since she’s gone off the deep end about hating Obama and loving the Republicans, she went nuts when the Secret Service told her she had to shut her shop down. Well they actually told her she could stay open, just that customers would have to come through the back door. So instead of just enjoying the historic event, she made big huge signs to hang in her store windows, got interviewed by all the local news stations and even for Fox news up here in Denver. She’s made friends with conservative bloggers through out the state and the country over this crap. Obama hates small business was the gist of her complaint. She wanted to be the next Joe the Plumber.

The worst part, we learned from reading the article about her that the campaign offered her VIP passes to meet Senator President-Elect Obama and she declined. GRRRR.

So needless to say, the rest of the family spent all morning on the phone with each other. I decided that I couldn’t take it anymore and called her. I left her about five messages on all of her phones telling her that she was burning bridges in such a Democratic town and asking her to stop. Well she finally called me back with and we got into it of course. I couldn’t just sit by while she said the most ridiculous things. Such as — “if Obama is elected I’ll have to provide health care to my employees.” What employees?? She only has one, and that one just got fired. I told her how completely wrong she is. With Obama’s plan it was that you would have to have more than 25 employees and then you would get a tax break for providing health insurance. Anyway, it was totally ridiculous. She ended up hanging up on me of course because she’s like a child. So I called her back about five more times. On my fourth message I warned her that if she didn’t answer on my next call or call me back that I would just become indifferent to her and this madness. Sure enough, no call back or pick up. So on my fifth message I told her this…

“I’m going to put on my Obama t-shirt and go to the store and buy tons of food to take to the Obama office in Boulder where Marissa is working the phone banks, so I can feed all the volunteers so that when Obama wins Colorado and wins this election you will one day have good health care and social security so I won’t have to worry about you in your old age because indifference begins now.”

And that was that. I promptly followed up on that promise. Since then I’ve gotten even angrier with her, but haven’t been able to direct any of that toward her, which is for the best.

It doesn’t really matter any more because this country overwhelmingly voted for change and did the right thing. I have no idea what she’s up to down there and I don’t really care right now. I knew the best revenge would be if he won, and sure enough he did.

After such a crazy Saturday afternoon, I got ready for Mike’s Halloween party. It was a really great time. There were some new folks there and that made it way more fun. I got a little drunk and laughed a lot.

Sunday didn’t amount to much and then Monday and Tuesday were busy with work. Then Tuesday night it happened! I decided I wanted to hunker down and watch on my own but as it became clear that once they called the west coast it would be over I rushed over to Marissa’s house to watch them call it. I got there about ten minutes before west coast polls closed. Once they called it for Obama we opened champagne and celebrated. I’m so glad I went over there! We of course ended up in tears. What a moment for the whole world, but especially for this country, and extra especially for Democrats or like minded people who want to return this country to what we know it can be. Boulder erupted! Obama got like 75% of Boulder’s vote, there were even fireworks! Ahh Boulder, you deserve to be happy every now and again!

Me and Marissa before it was called.

Me and Marissa before it was called.

Chris and I afterwards. I've been crying!

Chris and I afterwards. I've been crying!

Anyway, I took off Wednesday so could just bask in the glory of it all. I watched a ton of coverage and then thew the West Wing into the DVD player to celebrate even more. It was a nice day at home.

So that’s what I’ve been up to. I may be going to Pueblo for the weekend. My dad wants me to come down so we can have a celebratory dinner. The only thing holding my back is that I am soooo tired and I just want to rest and do laundry and the like. We shall see. Either way, I’ll post about it.
