Deidre Hall to Campaign for Obama

Saturday September 13, 2008

According to an article in the Orlando Sentinel, Deidre Hall (Marlena) will join U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney across Central Florida on Sunday, September 14, participating in Women for Obama events as part of a “Change We Need” tour. The women will make three different stops on Sunday to discuss Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama’s policies and his committment to equal pay for equal work.

She may drive me crazy sometimes as Marlena, but this really made up for it!

Journalism School Drop Out

Sep 8, 2008 by

I had a great weekend with some nice surprises. When I was planning on hanging out all day on Saturday by myself, I got a phone call from my childhood friend Marci. She and a friend of hers, which is now a friend of mine, named Lisa were going for a nature walk near where I live. They were calling to see if I wanted to hang out afterwards. What a great treat!

So after their walk they came over and we hung out for awhile. We mostly dished about the DNC and told stories from our experiences. I told them all about how great it was to be at Obama’s speech, and they told me about all the other fun stuff they did during convention week. Lisa is a writer for Westword and so she got to write some interesting stories from that week. She wrote a really great blog about watching the speech in the streets of downtown Denver where it was being broadcast on the side of a building. Marci was up here just to experience it all and volunteer.

After having a chit and a chat we were starving, so we hit up Noodles for some good carb action. I, of course, didn’t stray away from my usual Wisconsin Macaroni and Cheese. It was divine. After dinner we meandered over to the mall so Lisa could pick up some Croc sandals and then we topped off the night with some Dairy Queen. It was so nice to hang out with some girls. And the best part was when Marci told me that she is moving to Denver! I am thrilled at this notion. Even though I’m not the best at staying in touch with my local friends this will give me one more opportunity to do so.

My dad was very proud of his youngest child.

And then there was Sunday. My sister Marissa received a great journalism scholarship and so my dad came up from Pueblo to attend. I got to go along as well. It was a fancy affair on campus with a fondue bar and even complimentary wine and beer. I was impressed. I’ve been to so many university catered events and this was by far the fanciest and the best. The J-School really went all out on this one. So Marissa received her scholarship toward the end of the event and she did great. They listed all of her accomplishments and activities. I recorded her receiving the scholarship certificate.

I was a little jealous through the whole evening because I am a J-School drop-out. I found Political Science more dazzling and I just didn’t have an extra year to spare on my education to get both degrees. I made my choice and I’m happy with it. As always my dad, sister, and I had a hilarious time. We also went a little bit overboard on election talk. We tend to get a little “us v. them” in our long diatribes. It probably isn’t fair of us, but that’s the beauty of America…we can talk about whatever we want.

After my dad left to go home, Marissa came over and I helped her work on her homework for Western Political Thought. Her assignment was to read Pericles’ Funeral Oration from ancient Greet times. His oration describes Athens’ democracy. At first glance it was hard to understand, so I decided to read it out loud for her in the form of a speech, because that’s what it was originally. When heard like that it makes much more sense. It is actually quite beautiful and it really reminded us of Senator Obama. It’s amazing how much we have stretched the meaning of democracy in the past eight years. As a country, we should get back to these roots.

I really had a great time helping her. I realized that my ability to comprehend and critically evaluate the text is far superior to what it was when I took that class the second semester of my freshman year. I even got out my book from that class (which I kept because I’m a dork) and started reading about Locke, and then about liberalism and social democracy. It was fascinating. And the most amazing part about this story is that I was doing this at midnight and not falling asleep. Can you tell it’s an election year?

Jeffrey Feldman: McCain RNC Video 'Tribute' Links Iran to 9/11

Sep 5, 2008 by

No doubt, showing a 9/11 video at a political convention was emotional exploitation.  But it was also something much worse:  it was blatant historical revisionism.  It was a cynical attempt to claim attacks on Americans–1979 and 2001–were carried out by the same ‘enemy.’

Jeffrey Feldman: McCain RNC Video ‘Tribute’ Links Iran to 9/11.

Jeffrey Feldman sums up the point I was trying to make in my last post about the 9/11 tribute showed last night at the RNC. Check out whole article if you are so inclined.

Completely Conventional

Sep 4, 2008 by

Bleh…I had a crappy ass day at work. Nothing worked for me. Like stupid technology problems prevented me from getting real work done. And what I mean is, not technology problems I had to report about, I mean literally on my computer. Just super dumb stuff that didn’t make sense. I had to do the most random troubleshooting.

It was also a day when I had four people come into my office and ask me “did you get my e-mail?” Fuck! Yes, I got your e-mail and I will work on your task when I see fit, now fuck off. It was constant confrontation and frustration today.

The only thing that made me feel good about myself today was an e-mail that a project manager sent to my boss. It said:

I wanted to pass on my thanks for Rochelle’s incredible work on several of my projects this summer. Not only was she reliable and as always a joy to work with, she consistently strived to make each project better in my opinion, and not just in her area (say documentation) but overall, for ITS and for our campus customers. Her efforts on Smart Phone and Guest Wireless went well above and beyond the call of duty. She is one of the primary reasons these projects finished on time and with quality. She is a great resource and significant player in ensuring project success!

Onto politics. After Palin’s snide speech last night, Barack Obama made $8 dollars in one day. How fantastic! There’s just so much I could say about her, but I will try to refrain from doing that tonight. I just want to write about two issues and I’ll leave it at that.

1. I hate Republican spin. They are so ridiculous and unapologetic about it. They will do whatever it takes and say whatever it takes to get what they want. They contradict themselves constantly and they don’t care. They only have one principle, get power and keep it no matter what you have to do. They just go in whichever way the wind blows, or Palin farts for that matter. Click here to see Jon Stewart call them on all of this. I love this clip! Sadly, I can’t embed it.

2. Part of me feels like 9/11 was yesterday and decades ago all at the same time. Maybe because it is so vivid in our memories that it just seems like yesterday, but the years have created a distance between us and that event? I just don’t understand how they can continue to wave the “bloody flag” the way they do to get votes. It hurts that they use it. I was disgusted with the tribute, because it wasn’t a tribute to those who sacrified and those who died. It was a justification. The fact that it began with the phrase “It all began in Iran years ago…” showed it’s true intent. We must keep up this war and then go to war with Iran. Al Qaeda is not in Iran at all. They are different sects of Islam. But I guess most American’s don’t know that. A brown arab is a brown arab, right? Anyway, I digress. I appreciate this commentary by Keith Olbermann, who was also disgusted.

Jane Smiley: Already Lying

Sep 3, 2008 by

When we look at Bush, Cheney, McCain, and Palin, what we see are different varieties of selfishness. Bush’s selfishness is defensive, stubborn, and dumb. Cheney’s is power-mad. Those were bad enough, and even the Republican platform agrees that they have been destructive. McCain’s selfishness is impulsive and hotheaded, while Palin’s is simply heedless (and, judging by reports from Wasilla, vengeful). So, there you have it. The Republicans think that selfishness is a winning ticket that always appeals to something in the American people–would that be selfishness? Obama has made his opposition to selfishness explicit. That doesn’t mean he will win–unless the bookies are right. I hope they are. Because four or eight more years of lying, cheating, opportunism, war-mongering, refusal to prepare for things, and a lack of “vetting” will surely do us in. And let’s be clear. There is no one in the world, not even Putin, who can do us in. It can only be suicide.

Jane Smiley: Already Lying.

I enjoyed this piece, and I think she is right on. There’s just something so evil about all of this, you know? Dishonest and ruthless. That’s what drives me crazy. They love to call it the party of Lincoln, but I think that Lincoln has rolled over in his grave. The best way I can describe it is good guys vs. bad guys. And I think you know who I’m saying the good guys are. To prey on the patriotism and fear of hardworking Americans who are trying to figure out the best way to serve their families just so you can have money and power is disgraceful. And if there is any kind of hell or retribution in the after life, they are on their way to one huge punishment party.
