So I hate to drone on about work, but work is ruling my life this week. The big project continues and I spend hours at a time staring into my display making tweaks and writing code. I’ve been keeping my door closed with a little note asking for peace and quiet, although I still get people knocking all the time. But that’s ok.

Paging Dr. Yang

Paging Dr. Yang

I keep thinking to myself that I need to channel my inner Cristina Yang. If you’re not familiar. Cristina Yang is the go-getter work obsessed surgeon on Grey’s Anatomy. She’s brutal, cold, and serious. And that’s what this big project is going to take!

But sadly, no matter how hard I try, I could never be as disciplined like Cristina. It turns out, I’m probably more like Meredith this week. She’s a good surgeon too, and she’s pretty snarky, rather cold, but not all together unfeeling about others. After all, if I was Cristina, I’d probably say exactly what I’m thinking to some of my co-workers, which would not be a good thing. Maybe Dr. Bailey would be the best way to go. Yeah, Dr. Bailey.

When I got home from work, I put a bowl of chili in the microwave and watched a show. And then I packed my lunch for tomorrow and programmed the coffee pot for the morning. Then it was upstairs, where I put on my PJs and put a load of laundry in. By 7:30 I was pretty much ready for bed. But instead of just getting in bed, I’m working more.

Anyway, I didn’t have much to photograph tonight. The weather turned foggy and cold today and it just feels like Halloween. So I snapped a picture of one of my favorite halloween decorations. Why wouldn’t it be my favorite? It’s a cat and it’s got candy!

Oct 19 2009: Semi-unexpected visitors

Oct 19, 2009 by

I’m not exactly sure what I expect to happen most weeknights. I usually have big plans for the night. Like massive overhauls of various aspects of my life. Like today, I figured that I would come home from one of the most intense workdays I’ve had in forever and spend my off time cleaning my desk area and moving my printer downstairs. Sounds fun, huh? Yet somehow, these extra-curricular self-improvement exercises rarely happen after long days, and I typically crash in front of the TV watching Grey’s Anatomy and playing bejeweled.

And then there are these nights, that I don’t see coming for some reason. It starts of simple enough, Marissa asks me for a ride because Johnny’s working and he has the car. And then that ride is never just a ride to her house. It’s a ride to my house, because Johnny works nearby. And then there’s always this promise that it won’t be for long. Just until Johnny gets off work. But it’s almost always for longer than we plan. And it used to be that Johnny would call to tell her he was here, but she kept inviting him upstairs to help her get her stuff together or to hang out a little while longer. So now he just comes right upstairs. And then they end up sticking around for quite a while and we chat about stuff. It’s great! I really love these nights when I get to hang out with them.

So tonight was one of those nights and we watched the Broncos game and talked all about everything. From drugs, to creative writing, to sports fans, to budgeting and meal planning.

Marissa and Johnny and some yummy cookies.

Oct 18 2009: One of those weekends…

Oct 18, 2009 by

You know you’ve had one of those weekends when you’ve run the dishes three times and yet there’s still dirty dishes piled up on Sunday night. The kind where you eat really comforting food with people that you care about and they all stay quiet for a moment and say mmmm under their breath. The kind where you tell lots of funny stories that start with “remember when…” The kind that has football, and clean towels out of the dryer, and too many cups of coffee just because you can. The kind of weekend where you feel like you’re coming off a busy week, month, season, and you can finally reset. Reset your routine and reset your expectations. And the kind of weekend when you make new plans, set new goals, and finish the night feeling rather satisfied. Not completely, of course, because there’s still so much to do, so much to worry about, and so much left to desire, but more satisfied than usual.

This was my weekend.

Oct 17 2009: In the Kitchen

Today wasn’t quite the relaxing day I hoped for, but truthfully, I was also hoping for a productive day. After a little bit of breakfast and consulting some recipes for ingredients, I went to the grocery store. Once home, I started to immediately put together a big pot of chili for the crock pot. In went all the ingredients and then it sat around for several hours to cook up and get tasty.

In the afternoon, Brian and his fiancee brought over my old desk that Brian didn’t need anymore. I was definitely nervous to meet his fiancee, but it turned out all right. She was really nice and they seemed quite happy together. We sat around for about an hour and they looked through my London photos. It was all them and not me, I promise! I am so sick of those things, that it was painful when he was clicking through them so slowly. I’m glad that we can be so friendly. It’s a relief in a way.

After they left, I went back into the kitchen and made some Rock Bottom beer bread. This stuff is super delicious and accompanies chili really well. It also makes the house smell great.

And as if that wasn’t enough, I also made up some homemade chocolate chip walnut cookies. What can I say? I was in the mood to cook! Perhaps it was after looking at some really cool food blogs like this one or this one. Or perhaps it was all the inspiration I got from my friend Amanda who made a weekly meal chart and is doing some kick ass budgeting.

So I have to say that these little cookies (little on purpose), turned out perfect. I usually don’t put nuts in, but I had some left over from some banana nut bread I made last month. These were super tasy!

So all in all, the meal turned out great! I only wished it had been a little cooler out today.

Oct 03 2009: Witches and Ghosts

October is a great month. One of my absolute favorites. And since I had some special guests over, I thought I’d get their help making some Halloween decorations. We made some pumpkins and then a very scary ghost (it actually really scares me), and this kick ass witch. It reminded me of being little and when we used make decorations just like this. It was a fun day!
