Day 18 – (Mostly) Free Glasses!

Jan 18, 2011 by

Ah, Day 18, you were pretty nice. Going back to work was easy and felt good. Everyone was in a great mood all day long and it just flew by. There was so much laughter. I think a three day weekend does people good. After work, I hit up Walmart to pick up some breakfast sausage and was able to get my four packs of free Reach floss. It’s such a thrill to get things for free. My goodness!

Speaking of free, my glasses came in today. I ordered them from Coastal Contacts when they were doing free frames and lenses. Check out my blog post on The Simple Sisters to read all about it. Such a thrill!! I absolutely love them, they are perfect!

Day 17 – Broken

Jan 18, 2011 by

Today was pretty lame. I had some pretty good intentions, which pretty much fell flat. I couldn’t focus on anything and pretty much yawned every few minutes and so I took a big nap in the middle of the day, which is rare for me.

At some point in the evening, my cat Persephone started chewing on my Christmas tree, which was still up. That was all the motivation I needed to get all the stuff taken down because I didn’t want to clean up anymore barf. So I started to take down Christmas decorations and I left the tree for last. I took down each ornament with care and wrapped it up, and on the very last ornament left on the tree, I dropped it and it broke.

My heart practically stopped because I was afraid that it was the ornament that I have from my parents’ first Christmas together in 1978. My mom gave it to me a few years ago and I cherish it. I was relieved, and yet still very sad that it was my ornament from 1984. It could be worse, I suppose, but it still hit hard.

So I did what I do, and I photographed it really well so that I can always look at the pictures. Chances are I could try and track one down, but it wouldn’t be the same.

Day 16 – Nutella & Banana French Toast

Jan 17, 2011 by

Since Marissa and Johnny spent the night, we had been planning on a great breakfast and that is exactly what we had. This was Marissa’s idea and I executed it. She wanted Nutella and Banana French Toast. I was going to photograph the entire meal, but with six people running around here and the tight schedule we were under, I had to ditch the camera after slicing the bananas.

Day 16 - French Toast

It turned out awesome! I really loved it. Check out The Simple Sisters to see the recipe. I highly recommend it.

The rest of the day involved watching the Bears beat the Seahawks and another trip to the grocery store for me, where I got four boxes of cereal for $1.25 each and some fried chicken to eat for dinner. Our whole dinner from price cuts and coupons (fried chicken, mashed potatoes, biscuits, and kernal corn) only cost $8 for two adults and two kids.

Dinner was on the couch while we watched the Golden Globes, which I thought was pretty entertaining. Truthfully, the commentary on Twitter was way more funny than anything else about it. At the end of the day, this particular year’s awards will not be terribly memorable.

Day 15 – Good Food & Friends

Jan 16, 2011 by

I’m going to apologize right now. You see, there’s lots of cooking going on in my house recently and well, that’s what I’ve been taking pictures of, so get used to it!

My day began awesome. I slept in…a lot. When I finally got out of bed, I came down downstairs and had my absolute favorite breakfast — a bagel, coffee, juice, and yogurt. No one was here, which is rare these days and so it was totally quiet.

Day 15 - Good Food

The afternoon (because honestly, I woke up at the end of morning), was composed of some house cleaning, watching some football, and sitting around. It also involved getting things ready for Marissa and Johnny to come over. We’ve been planning on having a fun lazy weekend together with lots of yummy food.

Marissa and Johnny got here with some stuff from the store and some take ‘n bake pizzas and salad to have for dinner.

Right away, Marissa and I started to make cupcakes. She’s been looking at a lot of “food porn” (as she calls it) lately and wanted to make her own yummy things. She doesn’t have a lot of experience in the kitchen and so it was fun to teach her a few things.

Day 15 - Good Food

Mike and the kids came over again (to get in on all the food, of course).

The girls love playing on the iPad.

Day 15 - Good Food

And Mike, well, I guess having so many people in such a small space was wearing on him, lol.

Day 15 - Good Food

While the pizza baked, I snapped some adorable pictures of Callie and Persephone, which you know that I have to post!

And then we got to eat this delicious thing. Oh my goodness, it was sooooo good.

Day 15 - Good Food

After Mike and the kids left, the three of us watched some hilarious stuff on TV, and I did expose them to Extreme Couponing which was airing again. They had pretty much the same reaction that everyone else does. How do they do that and how come I’ve been paying so much for everything?

Day 14 – Friday Night Appetizers

Jan 14, 2011 by

With all the coupon clipping and shopping I’ve been doing, I’ve been doing a lot of cooking obviously! My favorite thing to do is add up how much my meal costs. That thrills me! Tonight I made my mom’s Mexican cheese appetizers. So delicious!

Day 14 - Friday Night Appetizers

The recipe is super simple. Heat some oil in a deep frying dish. Once hot, using tongs (of course), dip a flour tortilla and fry it on both sides. Once fried, rest the tortilla on some paper towels to soak up the grease. Heat an oven to 400 degrees and line baking sheets with tin foil. Put some salsa on the tortilla and sprinkle shredded cheese (I used Sargento’s Authentic Mexican) and put in the oven. Keep an eye on it and pull it out when the cheese has melted. About 10 minutes.
