Money and Europe (er…England)

Jul 6, 2009 by

So in June I was spendy. In July I am thrifty! Maybe it’s the shock of getting so much crap in June that I’m reverting back into my frugal ways, or it’s the fact that the fall is lurking and that means my Europe trip needs to be purchased. Besides paying for Europe, I need to save cash for Europe.

And so I’m trying out some new techniques to keep things under control. First, I’ve gone cash this month. Literally. I withdrew cash to use. I did this because I needed to (long story, but my old debit card had fraudulent charges), but the idea was intriguing. Cash is hard! Which sounds silly. But keeping track of how much I spend and getting receipts isn’t that easy. I’ve been relying on my bank card for so long that I used my online banking tool to keep track of every penny spent. Right now using cash seems a bit chaotic, but I know with a little training and discipline I can swing it old school.

So I have a little piggy bank and I’m doling out a certain amount a week. Wish me luck, or might go hungry by July 15.

And about that Europe trip…. It was one of my goals for this year and I’m determined to make it there. I’m concerned about the cost. I’m concerned about the time I can afford to be there. I don’t want it to be a rushed trip. Ideally I could take three weeks to go through all the countries I’ve dreamt about going to, but that’s just not possible financially for me.

I’m also torn about how much time I want to spend in London and England as a whole. It’s really important to me to take time there above all else. The one thing I don’t want to do is rush England.

With all of this in mind, I’ve made a decision. I’ve decided to take my trip to England and leave it at that. I don’t want to rush it, or rush the other countries either. I keep looking at this vacation as my one and only chance to go to that region of the world, and that’s a mistake. I know I can make those other places happen.

So that’s my story. Now I just really need to pin down what I want to do, get the time off, and make the reservations! I can’t wait to have something planned and to look forward to!

  1. I can imagine just using cash is difficult. But it sounds like you have a solid plan and you’ve got a great goal in mind. I think this is a great idea.

Thanks! I’m really excited to have a vacation on the horizon. Especially this time of year when things are just stupid crazy at work.
