Resolutions

Dec 27, 2007 by

I have a new pet peeve. I hate it when people say they don’t make resolutions because they try to improve themselves all year. I don’t know why I hate it so much, but I really really do!

A couple of days ago I was watching Larry King interview Brad Pitt. Sure enough, Brad pulled the old I don’t make resolutions, I’m always trying to improve myself. Grr.

Yes, it’s great to try and improve yourself all year. I too try that all the time, but there is something fun and great about setting goals for yourself for the upcoming year. Maybe it’s because I see each year as being very separate. It’s a time amongst itself that doesn’t really spill over in my mind.

So anyway, without further justification about why I think making resolutions is great, here are some of my resolutions for 2008:

1. Read More

I sucked at reading books in 2007. I think I read three books. Lame! So my goal is to read 12 books, one a month for 2008.

2. Stay In Touch

I tend to not call my friends and family as often as I should. For some reason talking on the phone doesn’t suit me. I really need to be better about that.

3. Eat Healthier and Friendlier

This is always a goal for me, but I would like to learn more about nutrition. I would also like to buy and eat earth and animal friendly products. When I don’t need animal products, skip it. If I do, try to choose companies that are dedicated to treating animals humanely. For example, eating from Chipotle is a bad idea.

4. Become More Spiritual

Deep down I’m a spiritual person, but I tend to not examine those feelings or let myself be close to the spirituality within me. As a result, I don’t feel attached to myself. I could do a much better job of just turning off the TV and letting my mind entertain me.

5. Worry Less About My Love Life

What is meant to happen will happen and I need to accept that. Worrying is not only bad for you, but it is not productive and will not change the outcome of anything.

Ho Ho Ho, back home

Dec 27, 2007 by

Well Christmas has come and gone, and so without giving a full recap I’ll highlight some moments. I’m also posting a slide show below.

First, I got all my Christmas knitting done. It turned out to be a lot easier than I thought it would be. They were a big hit at Christmas.

At home, my mom and I decorated a gingerbread house. We didn’t do that great of a job but it sure was fun!

I woke up to some Santa Claus presents, which is always a bit thrilling. There’s nothing like coming downstairs to be presented with stuff immediately. I love that tradition.

Food was delicious! Mexican at my mom’s and prime rib at my dad’s. No snow in my hometown, which was sad since it snowed a ton where I live and I missed it.

Before Christmas, I spent a couple of days with Brian. We had a very nice time. We even went to the movies! We saw National Treasure on Sunday, which was fun. Mike’s Christmas party went really well. I had three glasses of wine, which made it more fun. I walked away with some cat ornaments from the traditional white elephant game.

So all in all it was a nice holiday. I wasn’t too upset over the whole no husband on Christmas thing, so that’s good. I enjoyed time with my family.

I’m now back at work for two days and then I have another four days off! I love it! Nothing is happening here at all and there’s a ton of snow. It couldn’t be better.

Random Notes From the Knitter, Baker, and Ex of Many

Dec 18, 2007 by

So I had a pretty great weekend. You could say it was a lonely weekend since I had no face to face human interaction, but it was surprisingly not lonely. That’s right, I didn’t go out of the apartment the whole weekend. I did talk on the phone quite a bit, so maybe that is why it didn’t seem lonely.

I did a lot of Christmas knitting!

This included my Dad’s hat:

And one sock for the pair I’m making my mom.

She is going to be excited I think! I told her about my Dad’s hat and I think she got a bit jealous. Now I’m jealous because I love these socks! I made it shorter because I don’t have a lot of yarn for this. I realized while wearing this sock that I like it that way!

I did a lot of Christmas baking!

This included my chocolate chip cookies and my fudge.

I also added shortbread to the list this year.

I brought it a tray of goodies to just keep in my office for those who pass by.

I went to Franklin Covey and spent $145 on a planner and the pages inside. Starting January 1, I will have two pages for each day to keep track of daily action items and notes. I’m pretty excited about it. I hope that it works.

Even though I have this fancy thing, I still plan on using my beloved white board. I don’t know how I ever kept track of anything before this.

I realize I work in the tech field, but I seriously struggle with keeping to-dos electronically. I’ve tried so many different ways, and I just can’t keep up with it or pay attention to it.

The white board is in my face. It’s easy to add to and categorize. It completely helps me delegate. I love having such a non-tech way of handling my to-dos.

Other random notes about my life…

My ex-boyfriend e-mailed me in response to something I posted on MySpace. It was a really long and jolly letter. We never really talk at all. It was so random and unexpected.

Finally, here’s an adorable picture of my cats. They love to sit in the sun. I always enjoy it when they are doing the same thing or sitting in the same position facing the same direction.

O Christmas Tree

Dec 5, 2007 by

When I had moved away from Brian I was really afraid of Christmas. Since it is such a wonderful time of year to spend with someone you love, I feared that I would be completely depressed and upset. I originally thought that I would not decorate for Christmas or have a tree, since I had given him ours (it was his to begin with). But I guess something happened to me over Thanksgiving break. Maybe it was all the Christmas movies I watched with my mom and her husband during that weekend or seeing Christmas start to sprout up everywhere, because now I am now totally into it and it is not making me as sad as I thought I would. I even bought a new Christmas tree!

The only thing missing is a star for it.

I have so many wonderful and meaningful ornaments, that I couldn’t resist getting them out. Many are from my childhood and others are from my dear friends. Some represent where I’ve been, and there are a handful that represent my time with Brian. I suppose it was those ornaments that I feared putting on a tree. But now that they are up, I am happy. You see every year that Brian and I were together I bought a silver ornament with the date on it that could hold a photograph of us together. Now that they are out and up, I’m thinking of buying a 2007 ornament for us.

Maybe I’m feeling uplifted because Brian and I are spending more time together. He helped me decorate my tree too. We had Celtic Woman playing in the background and the lights turned down so the tree was really illuminated. He even got a little teary eyed as he placed these meaningful ornaments on the tree. It was a nice moment.

Of course the cats love Christmas because it means interesting changes to the apartment and more stuff to play with! It didn’t take long for the tree to be up before Persephone laid down underneath it.

Besides hanging out with Brian and my family a lot lately, I’ve been knitting of course. I’m making slow progress on Mike’s socks.

At work I have my big card sorting exercise tomorrow that will help me determine some structure for the ITS website redesign. I’m having five groups come in to perform this exercise. It’s been quite a big job to get all of this organized, pick content, make cards, plan for food and the like. I hope that it turns out to be helpful. I’ll try and post some pictures.
