Who Said Anythin' About Thanksgivin'..?

Well I must say, I had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend! I was surprised that I had such a good time, considering I am husbandless. Home was pleasant and relaxing and everyone in my family got along wonderfully!

After making a pie, which I didn’t take a picture of (lame on my part), and my delicious spinach and artichoke dip, I headed down to my hometown on Thursday morning. I arrived at 12:30, which was fine because we didn’t end up eating until 1:45 or so. The past couple of years have been hard on my mom’s Thanksgiving. Last year, one of her ovens went out. She really shouldn’t complain, because most people only have one oven, but it’s hard when you’re expecting to use both. This year, the kitchen sink backed up. So when I arrived there was a terrible smell in the kitchen. Not very appetizing. My step-dad got it working again, so it didn’t have that big of an effect.

My mom also invited two non-family members, which was new. I’d only had Thanksgiving with family, so I didn’t know how to act really. I did my best to be polite etc., but it was still a bit odd. These two ladies were so happy to be a part of it. Neither had anywhere to go on Thanksgiving.

Before eating, my sister and I did our traditional making of the word crackers. Basically we use spray cheese to spell out some Thanksgiving message on crackers. I think my mom had us do this when we were kids so that we wouldn’t distract her from her cooking. This year’s message was, “Who Said Anythin’ About Thanksgivin’..?” It’s an inside joke about her obsession, Conor Oberst. He had a personal Myspace for a short time that my sister found. He kept it private, but he did accept her friend request. Well I think word spread and so he put “Who Said Anythin about Myspace..?” in his profile. She thought it was hilarious that he used the word “anythin” with out a “g”. So she’s being joking about it ever since, and he’s long since shut down that page.

It’s all we could come up with.

We enjoyed our Thanksgiving food and then relaxed. My mom has three new kittens that are so adorable. They are all siblings and she’s raised them since they were tiny tiny (their eyes weren’t open when she brought them home). She rescued these kittens from behind her building at work and bottle fed them. Needless to say they love people and are really well behaved. They are about three months old or so. The two boys look identical, but each has one black ear. One on the left and one on the right. So their names are “Lefty” and “Righty”. Then their sister is all black except for a white bowtie mustache and white paws. Her name is Lucy.

Here’s Lefty!

After my mom’s house I went to my dad’s house for pie. That was nice and I got to see some of Cathy’s family, which is kind of nice. Then it was back to my mom’s house where we watched “Christmas Vacation.” Speaking of watching things on TV. My mom just got a new 52″ Sony Bravia. It was truly a joy to watch. I spent a lot of time in front of this thing over the weekend, including when I watched CU destroy Nebraska!

Other highlights of the weekend included:

Getting to eat my leftover bowl. It’s sort of like a shepard’s pie. Most find it gross, I think it is so yummy!

Going to an adorable yarn shop and buying this yarn.

Knitting of course. I finished my socks!! The second sock obviously went a lot faster. What fun!

I have two new projects in the works. One is a pair of socks for Mike and the other is a hat for my dad. While in the yarn shop, he pointed out a hat he liked and asked me to make the exact same hat. It’s your basic ribbed hat with a little bit of decorative Knit Cro-sheen yarn.

The beginning of Mike’s socks.

I very much like to wonder about what my life will be like at Thanksgiving next year. Will Brian be back with me? Will I have someone new to bring home or no one at all? We shall see. A lot can happen in a year.
