Mistakes, Interviews, and a Cat

Nov 28, 2007 by

Not much to report from my domain, just a few things.

First: I had to frog Mike’s sock and start over. It was way too loose! Then I had a hard time starting again and I kept miscounting stiches and so I would have to start over. Bleh.

Second: On Sunday night I decided to make another pie. I had bought some frozen crusts and I had some more pie mix, so I thought…why not?? Well it didn’t go so well. On the way to the cooling rack it slipped out of my hands and onto the floor. That’s when I knew Thanksgiving weekend was officially over.

Third: Work has been busy lately. I’m conducting all of these interviews to get feedback about my web site. It is so time consuming and everyone is pretty different about what they like, what they hate, and what they want. The last person I interviewed went on for over an hour. He couldn’t stay on the question I asked him. Bleh.

Finally: Just because she was so cute last night, I snapped these pictures of Persephone. She loves laying on my felted bag. That’s why I want to make her the felted kitty bed.

Who Said Anythin' About Thanksgivin'..?

Nov 26, 2007 by

Well I must say, I had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend! I was surprised that I had such a good time, considering I am husbandless. Home was pleasant and relaxing and everyone in my family got along wonderfully!

After making a pie, which I didn’t take a picture of (lame on my part), and my delicious spinach and artichoke dip, I headed down to my hometown on Thursday morning. I arrived at 12:30, which was fine because we didn’t end up eating until 1:45 or so. The past couple of years have been hard on my mom’s Thanksgiving. Last year, one of her ovens went out. She really shouldn’t complain, because most people only have one oven, but it’s hard when you’re expecting to use both. This year, the kitchen sink backed up. So when I arrived there was a terrible smell in the kitchen. Not very appetizing. My step-dad got it working again, so it didn’t have that big of an effect.

My mom also invited two non-family members, which was new. I’d only had Thanksgiving with family, so I didn’t know how to act really. I did my best to be polite etc., but it was still a bit odd. These two ladies were so happy to be a part of it. Neither had anywhere to go on Thanksgiving.

Before eating, my sister and I did our traditional making of the word crackers. Basically we use spray cheese to spell out some Thanksgiving message on crackers. I think my mom had us do this when we were kids so that we wouldn’t distract her from her cooking. This year’s message was, “Who Said Anythin’ About Thanksgivin’..?” It’s an inside joke about her obsession, Conor Oberst. He had a personal Myspace for a short time that my sister found. He kept it private, but he did accept her friend request. Well I think word spread and so he put “Who Said Anythin about Myspace..?” in his profile. She thought it was hilarious that he used the word “anythin” with out a “g”. So she’s being joking about it ever since, and he’s long since shut down that page.

It’s all we could come up with.

We enjoyed our Thanksgiving food and then relaxed. My mom has three new kittens that are so adorable. They are all siblings and she’s raised them since they were tiny tiny (their eyes weren’t open when she brought them home). She rescued these kittens from behind her building at work and bottle fed them. Needless to say they love people and are really well behaved. They are about three months old or so. The two boys look identical, but each has one black ear. One on the left and one on the right. So their names are “Lefty” and “Righty”. Then their sister is all black except for a white bowtie mustache and white paws. Her name is Lucy.

Here’s Lefty!

After my mom’s house I went to my dad’s house for pie. That was nice and I got to see some of Cathy’s family, which is kind of nice. Then it was back to my mom’s house where we watched “Christmas Vacation.” Speaking of watching things on TV. My mom just got a new 52″ Sony Bravia. It was truly a joy to watch. I spent a lot of time in front of this thing over the weekend, including when I watched CU destroy Nebraska!

Other highlights of the weekend included:

Getting to eat my leftover bowl. It’s sort of like a shepard’s pie. Most find it gross, I think it is so yummy!

Going to an adorable yarn shop and buying this yarn.

Knitting of course. I finished my socks!! The second sock obviously went a lot faster. What fun!

I have two new projects in the works. One is a pair of socks for Mike and the other is a hat for my dad. While in the yarn shop, he pointed out a hat he liked and asked me to make the exact same hat. It’s your basic ribbed hat with a little bit of decorative Knit Cro-sheen yarn.

The beginning of Mike’s socks.

I very much like to wonder about what my life will be like at Thanksgiving next year. Will Brian be back with me? Will I have someone new to bring home or no one at all? We shall see. A lot can happen in a year.

Let's Get Knitty This Weekend

Nov 21, 2007 by

In the land of crafting, I am so excited to report that my Ravelry invitation arrived this past weekend. It’s been great thus far! I really like it and it was worth the wait.

I also am excited to report that I bought more sock yarn yesterday! Actually, Mike bought it for me because he wants me to make him some socks. The yarn is wonderful:

This is the yarn Mike picked out for his socks. It’s from a company in Colorado called Lonesome Stone.

Some more sock yarn for me.

During the next few days I plan on relaxing, eating, and knitting! I hope to be finished with the mate for my first sock, along with some other knitty things. I’ll definitely report on it via this blog.

The Post About Thanksgiving

Nov 21, 2007 by

As everyone knows, tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and I’m planning on going to my hometown to spend it with my family. This isn’t unusual. I’ve spent every Thanksgiving of my life with my family. It of course feels different though without Brian. I’m not sure why it feels so weird. Of the four Thanksgivings that we had during our relationship we only spent two together. We didn’t even spend Thanksgiving together last year. He had to work and so I went on my own. I kind of regret that now, wishing that I had stayed home and made the big meal for us. It’s easy to think of that now, but if I think really hard then I remember how he bitched and moaned last year about how he hates the traditional Thanksgiving and hates the turkey and all the food. He didn’t even want to me to bring leftovers or do an alternative one when his weekend rolled around. This makes me feel a little bit better.

Tonight we’re planning on getting together to have surf and turf. He told me that’s the kind of Thanksgiving he would like to have. He’s planning on going to his brother’s house tomorrow, where they are doing the traditional thing. This upsets him of course, so hopefully tonight will give him what he wants. I hope he spends the night tonight, so I can at least be with him for part of Thanksgiving tomorrow.

Thanksgiving isn’t even that important to me overall, which makes me fear Christmas. I heard some Christmas songs today and started to get sad. That was always our big holiday. I’ve heard that it’s always hard at the holidays. I’m not sure what we’re doing with our relationship and I wish I knew.

Anyway, it’s hard to think of stuff to be thankful for this year. Hands down, this year has sucked for me and the majority of people that I know. There have been so many untimely deaths, illnesses not overcome, relationship troubles, and accidents. I guess I am thankful that the rest of us are here and that we are surviving 2007 somehow. I’m always thankful for my family, my friends, and my cats. I’m thankful for my job and for my health (stupid “bound”).

Yarn, Chocolate, Emotions

Nov 12, 2007 by

Aghh…It’s Monday and dreary and my eyes are struggling to focus and I wish I could go back home and go to sleep. Only it’s Monday and I have work to do, so I am going to have to focus my eyes and stop making foolish wishes.

My weekend was all right. It was filled with various emotions, lots of yarn, too much chocolate, and of course laundry.

First about the yarn. I had my first “Knit Some Socks” class on Saturday. So far so good. I have found that I really enjoy knitting on small needles with light weight yarn. It creates such a nice fabric that it’s worth the time to do. The class went well and so far I haven’t made any mistakes, which can’t go on forever. I’m bound to slip up at least once and instead of K2, P2, I’ll K4 or something.

This is the progress I made at the class, and then I made a lot more progress at home, but didn’t get a picture of it to share.

This weekend I also worked on my hat for my intarsia knitting class. I like it a lot. The right side looks great. It’s hard to believe there’s a mess of bobbins behind it. Tonight I have my last class for intarsia knitting. I really wish I would have taken the fair isle knitting class instead, because that kind of color work really interests me. Sharon, the instructor, will be teaching it again probably in the beginning of 2008.

This weekend I also had my sister over to spend the night on Sunday. She’s Vegan, and so I decided to make her this delicious chocolate cake that I’ve been obsessively wanting to make for her. It turned out really tasty and super chocolatey, which I love!

For dinner I made a light spaghetti that she could enjoy as well. After dinner I made some Vegan cocoa to accompany the cake. It was chocolate overload, but totally delicious and fairly not bad for us!

For the part about my various emotions. Boy land continues to be complicated. First, I was feeling lonely at the beginning of the weekend, which made me somewhat dramatic. Second, Brian lied to me about going in San Francisco for no good reason. He truly lies just to lie I think. I wasn’t asking him to come over or anything, but he has to act busy. Don’t ask me how I know he wasn’t there, but I just knew it. Then, in the middle of the night Brian texted me and said “I kinda miss you :) ”. I texted back and said “I kinda miss you too…” I don’t know what to think. I don’t even want to get into it.

I did watch a fair amount of the West Wing this weekend and I spent time with my cats of course. How perfect, the newly single woman and her cats and yarn, right? I did snap these adorable pictures of them though:

They totally flock to me if I’m taking pictures. I guess I’m pretty lucky! Also, sitting on the window seat didn’t hurt. They are so curious all the time and the love to just follow me around. I can’t complain!
