Happy Accidents

Oct 30, 2007 by

I’ve had a couple of happy accidents in the past couple of days. I love the thought of the happy accident. In case you didn’t know, a happy accident is identified as “a pleasant situation or event that is not planned or intended.”

My first happy accident was stumbling across my cute halloween cupcake pan from Williams-Sonoma a couple of days before Halloween. It was in the most random box and truth-be-told I had forgotten about it all together. So I decided to make some muffins to take to work tomorrow.

My second happy accident is that I left my fancy cake carrying tupperware at Mike’s house. Well I had to find something to carry these muffins in, and so I ended up getting one of handy cupcake carriers. I love it!

My third happy accident happened earlier tonight. I was heading home from an evening with my sister (another date night, we saw the Darjeeling Limited), and I decided to call my mom. I was using my hands-free blue tooth to dial and talk. So I said “Call Mom” and it thought I said “Call Bob.” I didn’t notice and so it began to ring. A man answered, which made me confused. The man on the other line sounded confused as well. I finally looked at my phone and saw “Bob.” Ahhh… my uncle Bob. So I told him who I was and he was so delighted! We had a really nice conversation about sports and other such things. He was always my favorite uncle and I’ve always enjoyed talking to him. I should really keep in touch better.

Another happy accident is that this is my 100th post. I think this is a great topic to have for my 100th post.

I also wanted to post this cute picture of Penny. She was laying there in a weird position against the chair.

Blocks of Color

Oct 30, 2007 by

I showed up at my intarsia knitting class at least five minutes early last night. It was nice to be somewhere on time. I feel like lately I’ve been running late. I stood outside of the store because the doors were locked. A fellow classmate joined me outside the store and we waited to get in. Finally a salesperson opened the door and informed us (rudely) that the class was being taught in the new classroom, which was on the other side of the building. So we made our way over there and found a few other knitters starting up.

My feeling about the class before going was that they weren’t going to teach me anything terribly new, and I feared that this would be a waste of money. The instructor got started and at first it did seem to be that way. She just barked some instructions to us and we started. But then she showed us a couple little tricks to make it this style of knitting work, and if I hadn’t learned that I would be forever puzzled. Soon I realized that she’s a pretty nice lady and eager to help. I was a bit behind because I changed the order of my color choices when I realized it just didn’t feel right. As a result I think she considered me to be her special student. I didn’t really need extra help, I just needed her to show me what I missed. For the rest of the class she was overly interested in my progress. I have two more classes left and so I’m excited to finish the hat by mid-November.

So knitting in this style is challenging because of all the bobbins dangling and getting tangled up. It’s going pretty slowly because I keep untangling them as I go. I do like it though and I’m excited for the end result. We’re making a hat with blocks of color.

I really like the colors I chose and I think this is a hat I could wear pretty often. I’m using Nature Spun’s sport weight in Natural, Bamboo, Grecian Olive, Ash, and Saddle Tan.

One more note on knitting. I made a cute little hat for Mike’s daughter Erica for her fourth birthday. I messed up and made one of the orange sections too thick, but it’s a kids hat, so whatever. She really liked it! I actually started the hat at their house on Saturday night while watching the Rockies game. She was so excited about the yarn and she helped me knit it by pulling out more yarn for me as I needed it. I didn’t finish the hat that night, but did the next morning, so I snapped this picture in my car before taking it over to her.

There's Always Next Year

Oct 29, 2007 by

Sadly my beloved Colorado Rockies did not win the World Series, or even a game in the World Series. It was a miserable few days that reminded me of 1991 and 1992 when I used to follow the Braves (before the Rockies existed) and I almost pulled my hair out watching my team lose in the World Series in back to back years. This time around every pitch was intense and I think I was gritting my teeth for about 17 hours in the past week. I’m glad it is over, and I am so excited for next season!

My only wish is that everyone else forgets about the Rockies. The amount of bandwagon jumpers has disgusted me. I had so much fun at the beginning of last season when they were just mine.

So my hurt boob (“righty”) is still sort of hurt. I’ve seen some doctors and I have to go back tomorrow. I’m sick of the bandages and I can’t wait to be back to normal. It is getting better each day, and yesterday I was able to move boxes and clean the apartment.

In other news, I recently made a very fantastic purchase. Sometimes I’m a sucker for infomercials. I hate watching them, but when I do catch them I tend to believe that the product they are peddling does everything they say it does. So when I kept seeing the Maxglide hair straightener on TV, I was intrigued.

A promise of hair straightening fast and effectively, with the added benefit of not having to blow dry my hair straight in the first place, made me incredibly curious.

So I posted a question on Yahoo Answers to see if real people thought it worked. I got so many responses back about how awesome it is, that I was set on getting one. This is a pricey piece of hair equipment, running at $80 or so. I waited a couple of months, acquired a Bed Bath & Beyond coupon for 20% off, and finally made the big purchase.

The results are truly amazing. I’ve used it twice now and my hair looks awesome. Instead of taking an hour to straighten my hair, using this tool only takes me about 20 minutes. The best part is that it works on my already wavy hair. I could not be happier. I will try to take some before and after pictures some time this week to demonstrate the coolness.

Tonight is my first class for Intarsia Knitting. When knitting intarsia, blocks of color are worked with separate balls of yarn to produce only one layer to whatever it is you’re making. In the class we’re going to make a hat with five different colors of yarn. We even had homework to do to get ready.

I’ll post more about the progress of my hat in this very blog when it starts to come along.

The Crazy Eyes

Oct 19, 2007 by

When I adopted my cat Persephone I had no idea how food crazy she could be. At the time, we happened to be feeding our other cat wet food, so we just started giving her some. Wet food became like a drug for Persephone. She craved it all the time, and when she got it she would eat it all in one sitting. Kind of like me with Taco Bell, cake, or milkshakes.

Years later, it just got to be too much to deal with. Both of our cats were gaining a lot of weight and sometimes she would eat so fast that she would throw up.

For the past year they have only been eating “crunchies,” and Perseph has kicked her habit. She’s back down to a normal cat weight and doesn’t go so crazy anymore, nor does she put her little life in danger by swirling around my feet every time I’m in the kitchen. Well, at least not as much.

There’s one thing though that Perseph does get wild about though. It’s milk. She gets what Brian and I call “The Crazy Eyes.” Imagine eating a bowl of cereal and you have a cat who looks as if she would kill you to get a lick of that milk. She used to just go for it and stick her head in my bowl. Now she knows better, after getting sprayed with the water bottle a lot, so she just sits there with her crazy eyes.
